When I first started blogging, I didn’t know i could create my own website, I thought you had to have special rights or something, so I never went ahead to do it, however I did find a free platform to blog on called blogger, it wasn’t bad but my blog wasn’t really mine, plus I didn’t know anything about niches or layouts, or even what web hosting was (i still don’t know the full purpose). But now I can offer at least 10 tips for people who want to start blogging.
Tip 1 – Start with social media, the best step to being successful when it comes to blogging is having a ready made fan base before you put your words on the internet, this way you’ll all ready have a traffic stream, I wish I knew this before I started blogging as it would be so much easier for me to divert my traffic.
Tip 2 – Find a free platform to test the waters, I’m actually grateful that my first ever blog was on blogger, It was free and it got to give me a taste for writing before I paid out money for my website and I knew I was ready to full commit to it all. I’d honestly give a few free blogging platforms a try before creating a website, as not only will you gain some experience but it will bring you that traffic for when you do have your own website. Another free blogging platform I use is Bloglovin’ which is where most bloggers link their posts too, you don’t need to link anything to these posts at all land it gives you an idea of what’s hot in the blogging world so you can stay connected better, It’s definitely my go to for free platforms. You can also try out creating a page on host sites such as Blogger to get a feel of writing and to help find your style.
Tip 3 – Don’t let anything hold you back, obviously my work and writing isn’t perfect, my grammar isn’t up to scratch and my spelling before spell check is appalling, my reason is i’m dyslexic. However theirs two reasons why I don’t have a proof reader and I try to do every thing myself, my 1st is I don’t have a big enough income to cater such a service. My second is I want other bloggers and beginner blogger to know it’s okay to make a mistake, I’ve made hundreds of mistakes on my blog, and I intend on keeping most imperfections, it just proves i’m a real human behind the keyboard. I’m not saying don’t get a proofreader or don’t proof read i’m just saying don’t get worked up about being perfect.
Tip 4 – Make sure you get good hosting, I’ve not had a single problem with my web-hosting and i’m with site ground, they’ve not given me any problems, i’m unsure on how their customer service is because I’ve never had to use it, and my site only went down for 20 minuets the whole 6 months I’ve been with them due to a scheduled maintenance. Win win.
Tip 5 – Make your website your own, I spent the first 3 months trying to copy other peoples websites, because I was comparing their success to my own, (which put me down causing my website to flop massively) Now I have my own simple style and my own quirky bits and I love it even more, not only that but i’m currently working on some new features that i’m hoping to be ready for my holiday in August! so look out for new and exciting things.
Tip 6 – Keep on top of your content but don’t over share, you don’t want to be posting every day people wont be able to keep up with you however if you post once or twice a week ( I recommend twice a week more) it makes it easier for people to follow you adventures and stories so they’re more likely to come back to you.
Tip 7 – Schedule everything, with technology being so good now, its so easy to write out mass content and have it ready to upload on its own, I like to be at least 3 months ahead of myself when it comes to my blog posts and social media, but this year my goal is to be 6 months ahead so I have time to work on my books and planners.
Tip 8 – network and learn SEO, you’ve probably heard of SEO but don’t know how to get the results that you want? well a friend of mine did an amazing thing for me and told me about a google add on that does all the hard work for me, so all i have to do is type what i write about in googles search bar and it gives me the most asked questions in relation to what i’m searching at the side of my screen, easy right! keywords everywhere is what i use and its worked wonders for me.
Tip 9 – find your niche, i have mine and its family travel, I extend a bit but i’m happiest writing about traveling with my children, it gives me a sense of value and an opportunity to educate people with what I know, be specific on your niche, if you’re into sports what kind? Extreme sports? Water sports? Gym training? Make that smaller? Skiing? Strength? Cardio? Mountain climbing? Think small then make it big.
Tip 10 – Have fun, go out an experience your writing, you love to game go out to conventions, you love comics, go comi-con, you love traveling, plan a gap year. whatever you love doing make time for it! you’ll love your blog even more because it gives you something to be excited about.
Do you have any good tips when it comes to blogging? If so i’d love to hear about it all! maybe you could help me?
